A Review of Young Nudy & Pi'erre Bourne's "Sli'merre"

A Review of Young Nudy & Pi'erre Bourne's "Sli'merre"

Atlanta rapper Young Nudy teams up with Kansas producer Pi’erre Bourne to create their 2019 collab album titled “Sli’merre.” Known for his beats on Playboi Carti’s hit songs like “Magnolia” and “wokeuplikethis*,” Pi’erre Bourne brings his beat making expertise to pair with the up and coming rapper Young Nudy. The two have collaborated to make good songs in the past, most notably “EA” featuring 21 Savage on Young Nudy’s 2017 project “SlimeBall 2,” however “Sli’merre” is their first project together. Their first single in the rollout for this album titled “Mister,” which also features 21 Savage, was a nice taste of the type of music the rapper-producer tandem planned to give us with the release of this album. Their second single, “Extendo” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, didn’t have the same quality as their first single in my eyes, however, it was still a solid single leading up to the release of the album. Taking a look at the tracklist, Young Nudy and Pi’erre Bourne’s “Sli’merre” is a collection of 12 songs which equate to 40 minutes of music. Within these 12 songs, 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, and Lil Uzi Vert appear throughout the four songs on this project with a feature. The mix of including bubbling rappers like Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby and established rappers like 21 Savage and Lil Uzi Vert provides a nice balance with the project, attracting Hip-Hop fans from different crowds. Now, without further ado, let’s get to the review!

Categories

The songs on this album divided into three lanes that are prevalent throughout the project

We Chillin’

“Sunflower Seeds” (1), “Black Hippie, White Hipster” (.5) “Joker” (1)

Slower flows on calm beats.

Yo Pi’erre You Wanna Come Out Here?

“Long Ride” (.5), “Hot Wings” (1), “Extendo” ft. Lil Uzi Vert (.5), “Gas Station” (1), “Swisher Backwood” (.5), “Call Dat Bitch Homicide” (.5)

The beats in this category go hard, however, Nudy’s verses can be hit or miss depending on the song.

Speed It Up

“Mister” ft. 21 Savage (1.5), “Shotta” ft. Megan Thee Stallion (1), “Dispatch” ft. DaBaby (1),

The flows and tempos on these songs combine for a more uptempo feel compared to the rest of the album.

Must Listen Songs

The concept of Must Listen songs are the songs that would give the best overview of the album as a whole. Songs that stand out for reasons to be described in the pending descriptions of the songs.

“Mister” ft. 21 Savage

The first released single and second track on Young Nudy and Pi’erre Bourne’s “Sli’merre” starts off with a calm flute beat before the bass and high hats come in, which speeds up the tempo on the beat. The flutes and bass balance each other out for a calm but upbeat tempo for the song. Nudy’s flow matches up with the feel of the beat as he speeds up from his typical laidback flow on the verses where the bass and high hats are present. 21 Savage follows suit on his verse where he shows his mastery of his improved sped up flow. The adlibs throughout the song are concise which also adds to the enjoyment of the song.

“Shotta” ft. Megan Thee Stallion

The bass, high hats and piano are present on the fifth song on “Sli’merre.” The beat produced by Pi’erre Bourne has a fast-paced feel to it which calls for a fast-paced flow from Nudy, which he displays on the hook. The small cadence change at the start of the hook from Nudy brings the listener in before he transitions into his verse without losing the listeners attention. Megan Thee Stallion comes in on the second verse with a fast flow that works to speed up the feel of the song a bit more which hooks the listener into her verse. Her adlibs throughout her verse go hard and her cadence is aggressive, demanding the attention from the listener.

Final Review

The story of Young Nudy and Pi’erre Bourne’s “Sli’merre” is the beats made by Pi’erre Bourne. Pi’erre Bourne brings a calm turn up vibe on each one of his beats while also allowing the amount of calmness or turn up to fluctuate from beat to beat so that no beat sounds the same. Young Nudy has room to improve with his flow, at times being offbeat or other times being passive on a beat that deserves a faster flow with it. I also think Young Nudy should cut down the length of his adlibs which can bleed on to his next line in the flow of his verses which can make his flow appear offbeat. I liked the use of 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby on their respective songs, showing what each artist can do in each artist’s element. However, the use of Lil Uzi Vert wasn’t the best representation of how talented Uzi can be. Overall, this album is a start for Young Nudy and a continuation of what we know of Pi’erre Bourne’s beat making.
